Our ministry is a calling we've carried out for a century and a half. Healing takes faith, compassion and skill, backed by the finest technology. And because we are more than simply sinew connecting muscle to bone, veins pumping blood to our hearts, true healing involves more than our bodies. True healing tends to our spirit and soul as well. True healing takes people. At CHW hospitals and clinics, thousands of individuals perform extraordinary acts of healing everyday. Lives are saved. Hope is rekindled. Dignity is restored.

Our History

In 1908, Bishop Conaty, from the Los Angeles Diocese, established a hospital in the St. Clair mansion in Bakersfield, California. Sister Mary Vincent created a new foundation of the Sisters of Mercy and occupied the St. Claire mansion in July 1908. In September 1908, three other nuns joined Sister Mary Vincent and the first patient was seen on September 15th in the 14-bed hospital.

In February 1910, Sister M. Joachim of the Los Angeles Sisters took over St. Clair Hospital at the request of Bishop Conaty.

The Sisters began to think about building a new "up-to-date" structure as they determined the St. Clair Hospital to be inadequate for the growing community. The first donor was William de Gana, a parishioner at St. Francis Church, who gave Sister Joachim a check for $45,000. They secured part of the Tevis estate for the Truxtun site. St. Clair hospital moved to Truxtun and the new hospital was constructed for $41,000. In November 1913, the three-story concrete structure with accommodations for 50 patients was ready.

Mercy Hospital continued to expand with the growing community and developed into the 194-bed facility that it is today.

In an effort to meet the community's increasing needs in southwest Bakersfield, Mercy Southwest Hospital opened in 1992 and quickly established a reputation for superior health care.

The "Spirit of Mercy" that that Sisters introduced so many years ago still lives on in the hearts of Mercy employees as well as donors and community members with special ties to Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield.

The Mission of Mercy Remains

Together, Mercy and Mercy Southwest Hospitals dedicate 267 beds, 1,202 employees, and 556 active medical staff to providing top-quality medical care to the community, regardless of economic status. This proud tradition unites an honorable history with a commitment to innovation.

Founded in 1910, our downtown facility, 194-bed Mercy Hospital reflects the values of the Sisters of Mercy. That compassionate and comprehensive care still continues to this day, with "the Spirit of Mercy" nurtured by our family of employees. Situated in downtown Bakersfield, Mercy Hospital is licensed for 144 acute care beds, including a 31-bed medical unit, a 31-bed surgical unit, a 31-bed telemetry unit, a 29-bed guarded care unit and a 20-bed adult ICU. The full range of medical and surgical services also includes; a 14-station, Level II Base-Station Emergency Department; six surgical suites; Post Anesthesia Care Unit; Ambulatory and Prep Units; Outpatient Surgery and Outpatient GI laboratory.

Mercy Southwest Hospital has quickly established a similar reputation for superior health care, since opening in 1992. This 75-bed facility adjacent to California State University, includes our respected Family Birth Center, which features an 18-bed Labor Delivery Recovery Postpartum Unit (LDRP), an 11-bed Postpartum Unit, a 9-bed NICU. Family Birth Center offers expectant mothers a warm, home-like setting with bedroom suites for labor, delivery and recovery. For several years running, Mercy Southwest Family Birth Center has been honored by the Bakersfield Californian as the "Best place in Bakersfield to have a baby." Mercy Southwest also includes a 29-bed Medical and Surgical Unit. Expanding in January 2005, Mercy Southwest Hospital is now the only full Acute Care hospital in its area with a new 14-bed Level II Emergency Department, a new 8-bed ICU along with 10 new Tele beds. Our Mercy Southwest expansion also included two new operating rooms, bringing the total for the facility to six.

One of the new operating rooms is a state-of-the-art Minimally Invasive Surgical video suite. The technology offers patients the opportunity for surgery with less scaring and quicker recovery. Complete with all digital video monitors and a plasma screen for wide viewing, this suite is the only one available between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

At both locations, we've offered our patients the advantages of numerous medical and technological advances. In doing so, we have furthered the careers of many of our employees, who gain valuable experience from participating in our forward-thinking programs. Meet Our People

Core values that include integrity and trust provided me with the confidence to relocate my family from the Midwest to Bakersfield and Mercy Hospital.

My initial interview with the critical care staff painted a picture of an ICU that continues to hold true today. We are a busy, high acuity unit that cares for a wide variety of Critically Ill patients. The demands on expertise are significant, our patients and families need us. As a team we count on each other. Our goals are set high, and "Nursing care will be the best".

Support isn't only among each other. Through collaboration with hospital Administration, management, medical staff, and ancillary departments, our goals are established and met one at a time. I can honestly say the care givers at Mercy are not forgotten.

After a 12 hour shift in ICU, I'm ready to return home to focus on other things. The other things include my wife and daughter. We spend our evening planning our next weekend trip. Will it be the mountains, the canyon, the beach, LA, San Francisco, San Diego, or even Las Vegas. We know that they are all only a few hours away. Or maybe we will stay in the community enjoying our life in Southern California.

Our mission includes a commitment to excellence that can only be maintained through the ongoing development of our people, their skills and growth as professionals. We respond to the dedication of our staff with a clear commitment to career growth. We offer many paths toward career advancement, including opportunities for clinical education, and the involvement of a management team that is committed to your personal and professional growth.

A classroom orientation is the standard introduction to working at Mercy. All RNs will be assigned to a preceptor and "buddy" to help complete the transition into the RN role. Mercy also offers an intensive RN New Graduate Orientation twice a year. This program continues to receive high praise from our RN New Graduate employees.

In addition, Mercy is in the process of presenting FAME, a new on-line continuing educational program utilizing teleconferencing presentations to nursing staff, physicians, patients and their families.

We believe that the effort you put into your job should come back to you as a clear commitment to your career growth. Our goal is to share a future that will be rewarding for all of us. Here you'll find many paths to advance your career, opportunities for clinical education, and a management team that is committed to ensuring your personal and professional growth. Your options are wide open.

Specialty Areas

Together, our two Mercy Bakersfield facilities offer comprehensive medical services to help ensure the health of our community. Specialized units spread throughout our network give you opportunities to share your skills and practice expert healthcare in distinct areas.

While providing exemplary comprehensive care, both Mercy and Mercy Southwest offer areas of excellence in specific areas. Mercy Hospital is home to the Florence R. Wheeler Cancer center, offering advanced radiation therapy and a level of care typically reserved for university and research facilities.

Mercy is also known for providing a wide range of surgery services, including bariatric surgery for weight loss, minimally invasive Endoscopy, neurosurgery, and urology.

Mercy Southwest provides urgent care, two surgical suites, and a widely recognized Childbirth Center. The center offers a warm, comfortable setting for labor, delivery, and recovery, while a NICU department is available for complicated deliveries and premature births. Further, due to our highly anticipated expansion in January 2005, Mercy Southwest will be the only full acute care hospital in its area with a new ER, new operating room suites--complete with a state-of-the-art video suite--and new ICU and Tele beds.
